This eye-opening look at the abortion process prior to the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 is now more relevant than ever, with a new introduction by the author revisiting history that is still salient half a century later

In the years before Roe v. Wade, women seeking to end their unwanted pregnancies had limited options—many of them dangerous, even potentially fatal, and nearly all of them illegal. This groundbreaking work by sociologist Nancy Howell Lee, first published in 1969, takes an intimate look at the entire abortion process—from the initial decision to terminate a pregnancy through the procedure itself and the aftermath—providing an incomparable view of what is still one of the most controversial and divisive issues in America. Based on interviews with one hundred fourteen women who had illegal abortions, Howell Lee's book reveals how the abortions were procured and paid for, and looks at the lasting effects the experience had on the participants. The interviewees were open and honest about what influenced their decisions, how they conducted their search for someone to perform the procedure, and the physical and emotional aftereffects. With many state governments across America currently passing new legislation that restricts and, in many cases, effectively bans abortion, an eventual return to the pre-Roe days threatens the well-being of millions of women, making Nancy Howell Lee's pioneering study more relevant than ever. It is a must-read for pro-choice and pro-life adherents alike.

To obtain an abortion, but so far they don’t seem to actually be preventing much. Rather, these laws only inconvenience those who seek and provide abortions. The continued pressure to change the laws leads one to consider the possibility that abortion may again be made illegal in the United States, and that the old kinds of sub rosa methods of illegal abortions may return, in which case this exploration of how they were done may serve as a valuable resource. While the topic of abortion continues.

Structural effects. Imagine for a moment that each person knows exactly one thousand others, rather than something like an average of one thousand others. One way in which the acquaintance networks might fit together is into tightly bounded subgroups of 1,001 members each, with no one within a subgroup knowing anyone outside that group. Or we can imagine a pattern where each person knows all but one of the people within his subgroup and one person in another subgroup, so that the subgroups are.

Case, the participants in the distribution of information have no control over the length of time that an address remains useful. In addition, some sources of abortion are not available to anyone who learns of the address and has the necessary amount of money. Some practitioners select their clients from those who come to them, and only perform abortions for certain people. Other sources are so incompetent or dangerous that the women who used them originally would not give the address to others,.

The consequences—“the rich get richer and the poor get children”—but this formulation ignores the very large part played by individual decisions as to the most moral course of action, which it has been argued is related to observation of what others in the immediate social environment do in such a case, and access to information about how to go about carrying out the various alternatives such as abortion. Neither of these factors is directly related to the possession of money, status, or power.

Expect to obtain a hospital abortion under the current laws and the current medical interpretation of those laws. For those who do succeed, however, the advantages are considerable. Hospital abortions are performed under the best possible conditions from the point of view of safety, they usually do not require any travel, and the costs are reasonable and can often be paid by hospitalization insurance.
