Despite his worldwide reputation as the father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud’s security in his native Vienna changed overnight when Hitler’s forces annexed Austria on March 12, 1938. His books had already been burned across Germany, and now he and his family were at immediate risk. The Nazis carried out regular raids on Jewish families’ homes, and the Freuds were no exception. They suffered a period of house arrest and two months of uncertainty, before finally securing papers for emigration to England and making a last-minute dramatic escape. It was after becoming refugees in Britain, however, that the Freuds’ story takes a fascinating turn. Following their escape from Austria, both Sigmund’s son Martin and his grandson Walter enlisted in the British Forces, going on to fight for Britain behind enemy lines in Austria.

Would have drifted for miles. The second group consisting of Frank Kelley, Fred Warner and Eric Rhodes were dropped after Walter, but like Walter’s experience, they were flown to the wrong location and parachuted out of the plane at the wrong height. Fred Warner narrates a similar tale to Walter in his unpublished memoirs entitled A Personal Account of SOE Period. Fred found himself alone in enemy territory without his colleagues, eventually making his way to Zeltweg aerodrome, arriving after.

August with news that their son had had a serious accident. He wrote: The accident happened on 24th July; he overturned with his car when driving in Germany; he was on his own. The War Office sent me a telegram which really sounded as if there was very little hope left. But a few days later friends phoned from Germany and gave more reassuring news. On the 1.8 [1st August] Walter’s Commanding Officer, a Colonel, phoned me and found me by coincidence at home. He had visited Walter on the same day.

Drill they prepared us. As invariably happens there was, when the great day dawned, a long wait of upwards of four hours on the parade ground before the arrival of His Imperial Majesty: and then it was all over in a few minutes. I could not see much of the Emperor because I was in a rear rank and the horse-tail-crowned shako worn by the tall man in front of me blocked my view. But I enjoyed an excellent view of roughly one-half of our tyrannical commander. I could see him plainly from his belt.

Memories of such times with his father, Sigmund. The holidays in Vallø were usually for three weeks at a time. David recalls: ‘It was a huge social whirl with all the extended family there. Aunts, uncles and cousins filled the house every day.’ During these holidays their father used a cine camera to stage mini productions with the family as the cast. He produced one called Football Pools in which many Danish relatives were roped in. On another occasion one of David’s parties saw the filming of.

Recalls: Through his working life, he tried to get businesses going to get out of the job he was in. At one time he created a perfume company. It had four basic fragrances which were mixed together in various potencies to a special scent. My job was to go into the hut at the bottom of the garden and screw all the lids on the bottles. The equipment consisted of a large bottle with alcohol in it, four little bottles with basic fragrances for mixing, an empty big bottle to put the mixture in, and a.
