Grey Haward has always detested the Chemists, the magicians-come-scientists who rule her small western town. But she has always followed the rules, taking the potion the Chemists ration out that helps the town’s people survive. A potion that Grey suspects she—like her grandfather and father—may not actually need.

By working at her grandfather’s repair shop, sorting the small gears and dusting the curio cabinet inside, Grey has tried to stay unnoticed—or as unnoticed as a tall, strong girl can in a town of diminutive, underdeveloped citizens. Then her best friend, Whit, is caught by the Chemists’ enforcers after trying to protect Grey one night, and after seeing the extent of his punishment, suddenly taking risks seems the only decision she can make.

But with the risk comes the reality that the Chemists know her family’s secret, and the Chemists soon decide to use her for their own purposes. Panicked, Grey retreats to the only safe place she knows—her grandfather’s shop. There, however, a larger secret confronts her when her touch unlocks the old curio cabinet in the corner and reveals a world where porcelain and clockwork people are real. There, she could find the key that may save Whit’s life and also end the Chemists’ dark rule forever.

To the elevator, where he punched the button for the third story. Grey’s stomach plummeted as the elevator surged to Benedict’s private floor. She’d never been to this part of the house. Maybe she’d look for the first window and throw herself from it. Out of nowhere, the memory of flying with Blaise overtook her. She closed her eyes and let it soak through her. When the elevator stopped, she took a deep breath and tripped over the threshold before Drakon could pull her arm out of its socket. A.

Stumbled across the clearing to Blaise and fell on her knees next to him. His long twists of hair writhed across the canvas as she shook his shoulders. “Blaise, wake up.” Her voice carried in the stillness. “Grey.” She forced her fingers to unlock from his sleeves and sat back, pressing her fists to her temples. “The keys. I saw the keys.” His liquid eyes didn’t waver from hers. “Then you know. You know what I am. You know where the legend of the Mad Tock comes from.” “How could you do.

Irritated line. “The cracks. The ugly cracks. He has them”—Benedict skimmed his own arm from wrist to neck—“everywhere.” Grey gulped a breath. “Who? Who has them?” “The gray one. The man who comes every few arbor cycles for a report on the city.” Her heart jolted. Was this man the one she needed to find? She opened her mouth to question Benedict, but the porcie’s next words crushed her hopes. “His hair and eyes are the color of iron. Such a drab, gray creature. And those lines—everywhere!”.

Rested on a bench beside them. Strange clinking sounds accompanied the woman’s weeping. Blaise strode across the room, ignoring their gasps, and knelt by the child. The ghost of a grimace marred the boy’s face, but his expression settled into a blank stare as Blaise touched his cold, smooth hand. “You’re him?” The merchant’s words tapped at Blaise as he cautiously shifted the child’s form. “You can repair our little Finnegan?” The tinkling sound increased, drawing Blaise’s focus. The woman.

Offered. Grey flopped to her side. The springs beneath the thin mattress creaked with every movement. She wrapped her arms and legs around a pillow, squeezing as hard as she could. It didn’t help. Nothing blocked out Whit’s face. He hadn’t touched her after she turned ten, as Mercury City law dictated. His smoky blue eyes had been wide on that birthday. His mouth a serious line as he set a bracelet made of buttons on the table and retreated before she reached for the gift. The withdrawal.
